Yesterday's interview

Met with an academy award winning film producer. He has a movie site, a niche (specific genre) Netflix). But the guy and his CFO know nothing about technology. I had trouble entering their site and playing the free movies before my interview. We left things with me going home and exploring their site and sending the CEO (the Oscar winner) an email. In it I told him what was wrong with the site, and what the company needed to really succeed/compete.
We'll see what they are willing to invest in the company and in me.
It's so interesting, now two days in a row I have met with people who have a great business idea, but don't get the internet. They hire others to build them a site as cheap as they can so they can move this business idea from the market they know well online. They have no clue that once they do that they are a technology company, and if they don't invest properly and enough in their technology platform their great business idea will fail. They think they can just throw up a website and continue to pour money into the other areas that if it were a bricks and mortar business would help the company to succeed thinking they can save money on the website side. These aren't companies whose website is just a brochure for their bricks and mortar these are people with ecommerce platforms, and online business models. We'll see the response I get to the email I sent CEO at his request. He claimed he didn't get it, and he didn't know enough and needed someone like me. We'll see if he is smart enough to understand what I'm telling him and willing enough to put his money where his mouth is.

Interviews continue

Had a good meeting today but I don't think their timeline works for me, they are in no hurry.
Really enjoying playing the social stock market on empireavenue.com just as my father is pushing me to learn about real world investing. The social stock market value is a combo of play money, managing a portfolio and your social network activity. Its causing me to evaluate how I use Facebook and Twitter and encouraging me to post more. This has the side effect of raising my klout.com social relevancy score.
We'll see how tomorrows interview goes, and what a fun surf I'll have in the morning and how much fun I can have on empireavenue.com.

Is the economy going to effect my search?

Only time will really tell. And I don't believe it will. I believe whether I get a job now is about me not the economy. This time off since my last full time gig has been a time of huge personal growth for me, besides that I am in the best shape of my life. I'm ready I want to work, more then I ever have in my life. And its not just for a paycheck. There are experiences and interactions I am craving at the moment that go far beyond bringing home a paycheck a few times a month. Not that the increase in cash flow won't be a really nice addition to my life. But the daily structure, the mental engagement, and the social interaction with a particular set of shared interest peers is what I am really after at the moment. Analysts say this isn't another tech bubble, that investment has been in line with real innovation and real value, and that unless there is a sustained hit to the tech stock market lasting months the present tech boom should continue for some time. I have 2 interviews today, one tomorrow, and one Thursday. I think I'll be going to work everyday in an office in September, but we'll see won't we.

The Job Search continues

I feel good. I continue to interview. I have not aligned with the right job yet as I am not posting about receiving and taking an offer, but I still feel good about it because I continue to interview. I have 4 interviews this week so far and 2 of them seem at least on paper to be more in line with what I'd really like to do. Last week I had a final interview with one company, but they told me they would be taking 10-15 days to make a decision. Plenty of time to keep looking and find some thing even better or a competitive offer.
Despite what's going on in Washington and the greater US economy the tech sector is booming. While unemployment is at 9+% nationwide this sector is at 3%. I am poised to take advantage of that. Besides beinga senior LAMP developer and a great hands on manager/early stage executive I have been teaching myself Ruby on Rails, and playing with node.js to get my cops really current. With all of these interviews its just a matter of any day of aligning with the right opportunity.

In the meantime I'm playing with some social status sites http://www.klout.com, http://photorank.me, and now http://www.empireavenue.com/. I'm also playing with Google+. This is of course when I'm inside and not outside riding my bicycle or surfing. Staying in shape and enjoying the wonderful summer weather is a priority not just while I am looking for work, but will continue to be important to me once I am fully employed and going in to an office every day.

Sllicon Beach: My first post

In 1990 I moved from NYC to Sillicon Valley the Mecca at the time for software computer techies like me. I worked in Sillicon Valley until the fall of 1993 when I married the late Caryn Shalita and moved to LA. LA at the time was beginning its transition from being part of the Southern California military industrial technology world. The transformation is now complete. A recent article said there are almost as many startups in LA as in Silicon Valley and they are now calling this area Silicon Beach. My recent phone calls and interview schedule reflects this new tech boom where I live. I have at least one phone interview if not multiple, every single week day for the last few weeks, and I have had a growing number of in person interviews as well. I have yet to find the right fit, but there is so much going on I am far from discouraged. For the past year I have been involved with a yet unfunded startup and working projects for a media boutique but I am now looking actively for something more sustainable and expect to jump in full time to a well funded entity breaking new ground in web X.0 or mobile rather soon.
A lot of these entities are giving me tech interviews in the form of tests. Haven't taken this many tests since I graduated college over 20 years ago. Not loving the tests but certainly getting more comfortable with them, and its helping me to see who I'd like working with and for and who not.
A few of the jobs are telecommuting possibilities by design, so although I may start work any day now, I still may not be headed into an office anytime soon.

India April 2007

I am connecting with photographers from all around the world on the new Google+ so I wanted to share some of my best photos with them. Thought I'd share them with you too, and for those who were with me on that trip or who have seen them a reminder. One of these is on display in Greentree Meditation Center in Venice CA, and two are on display in the Double Bay Meditation Center in Double Bay, New South Wales in Australia. Enjoy.

KaleidArt at The Venice Art Crawl

Starting last October I began participating in the Venice Art Crawl. Its the third thursday of every month. Getting out and overcoming whats left of my shyness and acting like an extrovert artist to sell my art is definitely new to me. And has been a journey over the 10 of these I've now done. Tonight I gave out the most cards, heard the best response so far, got my picture taken for a future article on Art Crawl hot spots and sold 5 fridge magnets. I also sold a piece by accident. A fellow artist knocked over my easel during setup and agreed to pay me to replace the piece, which had its mounting crack. This at first got my vibration down, but I managed to raise it because the rest of the good things happened towards the end of the night. Things are looking up for me on all fronts. More on this tomorrow.
